Mizhavil Thayambaka: a traditional Kerala percussion performance

The Mizhavu is a copper drum performed as a accompaniment during Koodiyattam, the only remaining relic of Sanskrit theatre. In 1963, Paynkulam Rama Chakiyar Asan, staged a performance at a private venue outside temple premises for the first time and created history. In 1965, the asan went on to form a department for Koodiyattam, in the Kerala Kalamandalam, and opened up the learning to aspirants outside the Chakiyar and Nangiar communities. In this video, Kalamandalam Rajeev and Kalamandalam Ravikumar lead an exclusive Thayambaka adapted for the Mizhavu, at 8 Point Art Cafe, Kollam, as part of the Onam celebrations organised by the District Tourism Promotion Council, Kollam, on 6 September 2017.
